LOS ANGELES, CA – La Opinión endorsed Proposition 38 in an October 10 editorial, saying the measure would provide a stable source of support for medical research disrupted by federal funding cuts.
“The purpose of Proposition 38, which California voters are already deciding, is to create a stable resource available to scientists to advance science,” La Opinión’s editorial board wrote. “…We believe that the breakthroughs in disease prevention and treatment–made possible by research funded in this way–are a priority for resuming research that had been stalled by the Trump administration.”
Proposition 38 provides vitally needed funding for immunology and immunotherapy research. Half of the funding will be distributed through competitive grants to nonprofit universities and medical research institutes. The other half would support a nonprofit immunology research institute affiliated with a University of California campus.
The editorial also highlights several provisions of the measure: 10 percent of revenue generated by funded therapies would go back to the state to help cover the cost of the bond; treatments developed with the funding would be offered to California patients at a price 20 percent below the national average; and for-profit companies would not be eligible for funding.
The editorial also noted support for the measure from organizations including the ALS Association, the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Nurses Association\California. The California Democratic Party and the California Republican Party also support it.
“La Opinión supports (YES on) Proposition 38 and urges its readers to vote for it,” the editorial concludes.
