Women face a significant burden of disease and health conditions that could be treated, prevented or cured through immunology research:
- Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women. In California alone, about 63,000 women die of heart disease every year.1
- Cancer is the second leading cause of death. This year, more than 45,000 women in California will be diagnosed with cancers that uniquely affect them including breast, uterine, ovarian and cervical cancers.2
- Two-thirds of those living with Alzheimer’s are women.3
- Four out of five diagnosed with autoimmune diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis are women4 and 50% are more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than men with the same conditions.5
- Reproductive conditions such as endometriosis impact more than 11% of American women6 and up to 5% experience recurrent miscarriages.7
Prop 38 will support new approaches to prevention, diagnosis and treatment for these and other conditions that disproportionately affect women by expanding research into how the immune system contributes to these and other diseases.
By investing in immunology and immunotherapy research, Proposition 38 could help scientists better understand why certain diseases affect women differently and develop more effective treatments and prevention strategies that could ultimately improve the health and quality of life of millions of women in California and beyond.
YES on Prop 38 is supported by a broad coalition of more than 60 organizations representing patient advocates like the Alzheimer’s Association, the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, the ALS Association, the American Nurses Association\California, as well as doctors, researchers, scientists, and more.
